Fuel Storage Planning for Mixed Equipment Fleets

0 comments 2 min read

Fuel storage planning becomes difficult when one site serves trucks, excavators, generators, and seasonal equipment. A portable diesel tank can reduce daily trips for refuelling, but the tank size and transfer setup should match the way the fleet actually works.

Start with daily fuel demand

List each equipment group, its average operating hours, and its expected fuel use. Use normal working days rather than the maximum number printed in a brochure. Add a small operating reserve for delivery delays and weather, then compare that total with the usable capacity of each tank.

  • Record fuel use by machine and shift.
  • Separate road vehicles from stationary equipment.
  • Allow space for safe expansion without filling the tank to the brim.

Balance tank capacity and site movement

A larger tank reduces delivery frequency, yet it may require a stronger base, a forklift route, and more room around the dispensing area. For a small farm or short construction project, a compact portable tank can be easier to relocate. A larger fleet may need a tank with a higher flow transfer pump and longer hose reach.

Plan the transfer point

The tank should sit on a stable surface with enough clearance for inspection and vehicle access. Keep the hose, nozzle, filter, and emergency shutoff easy to reach. A clear refuelling lane helps operators avoid crossing moving vehicles and makes shift changes faster.

Ask the supplier for operating details

Before ordering, confirm usable capacity, empty weight, lifting points, pump flow rate, meter options, hose length, power requirements, and delivery packaging. Ask for drawings when the tank must fit inside a service truck or a fixed storage bay. These details prevent changes after production starts.

A practical decision rule

Choose the smallest capacity that covers the planned operating cycle with a sensible reserve. Then select the pump and accessories that support the busiest shift. This approach keeps the investment manageable while giving the fleet dependable access to fuel.
